[informed-investor] Gold Crosses $ 1466/oz, Silver $40/0z; Whatever Be The Logic Silver Is Moving To $ 50/oz

According to a recent PBS News Hour report, NASA scientists have uncovered trace elements of gold on the surface of the moon.

The discovery seems all too fitting, considering the fact that gold prices have soared beyond this planetary orbit to boldly go where no yellow metal has gone before. To wit: On April 5, gold shot up more than $20 per ounce to surpass its previous record AND land at a new, all-time high.
 
According to "fundamental" analysis experts, political instability was the one main factor that lit the rocket launcher beneath gold prices:
 
"Gold shook off early weakness to trade in record territory, supported by conflict in the Middle East and North Africa... People want some protection."
 
This kind of logic goes over just fine -- as long as you were born yesterday. Because anyone who's been following gold prices over the past few weeks knows there has NOT been a consistent relationship between Mideast tensions and gold. Mainstream market observers have said so themselves, many times, as evident from these earlier headlines:
 
  • "Gold Dips To Two-Week Low even as ongoing conflict in Libya and the Middle East."
  • "Gold Declines On Global Cues"
  • "Gold is struggling to gain traction as it's caught between huge uncertainties including geopolitical tensions in the MENA region (Middle East and North Africa)." 
The fact is, there are always countless external variables surrounding a financial market. It's impossible to know which one of these "x" factors the market will react to, how it might react, or if it reacts at all.
 
Elliott wave analysis doesn't try to interpret the ever-changing external variables. Instead, it examines the market's internal Elliott wave pattern AND various other technical indicators. That's what prompted EWI's Metals Specialty Service editor Mike Drakulich to go on high bullish alert on April 4 -- one day before gold's surge to new highs:
 
"Right now it looks like a fourth wave contracting triangle could be close to completing. An upside thrust should follow. Bottom line is that I favor Gold going to a new all time high above 1448."

Elliott wave forecasts don't always work out like this. But they do give you an alternative to all the guesswork about the potential impact of "the fundamentals."

Q4FY2011 Power earnings preview 

  • We expect power generation in India to touch approximately 212.9 billion units (BU) during Q4FY2011. This reflects a very healthy growth of 8% year on year (YoY) backed by nearly 12% incremental capacity over the last year. Sequentially, we expect all-India power generation to grow by 6%. 
  • Given the rising mercury in Q4FY2011, we expect power requirement to grow by 6.3% sequentially and by 4-5% YoY. As a result, we expect the power deficit to be around 8.5% in Q4FY2011 against 7% in Q3FY2011. However, due to significant capacity addition over the last year, the power deficit is expected to fall to 8% against 10% in Q4FY2010. 
  • The power deficit is likely to be higher compared with the last quarter but lower compared with the last year. The effect of the same should get reflected in the merchant power prices. We believe the merchant power prices are currently hovering around Rs5-7 a unit against Rs3 a unit in Q3FY2011 and Rs8-9 a unit in Q4FY2010. 
  • In the fourth quarter a major change engulfed most of the power generators in India. Coal India Ltd (CIL), the largest coal miner in the country has raised prices of coal selectively, especially for companies that are not selling power through the regulated route. More or less, a partial impact of this hike should be reflected in the Q4FY2011 performance as the price hike was announced in the later part of February. Nevertheless, we should see the full impact of the same in Q1FY2012 in the form of contraction in the margin of the power generators, especially those with a higher proportion of unregulated power. Even Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) is planning to revise its coal prices upward during Q1FY2012. 
  • We expect the power generation companies to report healthy top line numbers, driven by a higher power offtake and a revival in prices. 
  • We believe power transmission companies should report a healthy growth in their top line and bottom line over the last year. The transmission and distribution (T&D) and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors are likely to do well during Q4FY2011, as all of them are having a healthy (around 2x FY2010 sales) order book position. Moreover, traditionally they book higher order into sales during Q4FY2011.

Q4FY2011 Retail earnings preview 

  • The demand environment for the retail industry in Jan-March quarter continued to be benign, with players expected to post lower double digit same store sales growth (ranging between 10-12%).
  • Escalating input prices across the board are likely to impact gross margins, resulting in margin contraction. In certain cases, the continued leverage benefit and product and sales mix premiumisation would aid in margin expansion, case in point being Shoppers? Stop (Shoppers?), Provogue India (Provogue) and Titan Industries.
  • Aided by strong earnings growth from Titan Industries, Jubilant Foodworks and Provogue, the Sharekhan retail universe is expected to witness a 19.1% earnings growth for the quarter. From the quarterly perspective, Kewal Kiran Clothing Ltd (KKCL) would witness a small earnings deceleration.
  • Though a minor hiccup in margins & profitability for Q1FY2012 cannot be ruled out, looking at the mid to long term trend and optimism across consumption categories, we believe that all consumption play are at an inflexion point, with the long term demand drivers intact. Thus we continue to maintain our long-term bullish stance on the sector. From the large cap, valuation-wise, we like Pantaloon Retail, while we continue to have our Buy rating on Provogue (proxy to retail real estate play) and KKCL.
